During construction of a new location in Paterson, New Jersey for a national fast food franchise, general contractors working at the site discovered an unknown UST. AquaTek was retained to investigate the newly-discovered tank and subsequently uncovered 10 tanks that had formerly stored gasoline. AquaTek implemented a plan to uncover, clean and remove all of the USTs in a manner that did not result in delays to the redevelopment of the site. During the course of the work, AquaTek was able to complete remediation of all the soil at the former tank locations and was successful in obtaining an NFA determination from NJDEP on behalf of the client.

The work at the site included the excavation and removal of 20 USTs. The removal of the tanks involved utilizing well-planned engineering procedures in order to safely remove the tanks within the constraints of the physical plant in a heavily urbanized area. Following UST closure, significant soil and groundwater contamination was detected, including the presence of a resin-type product on the water table surface. AquaTek implemented a site assessment program that included both alternative and conventional investigation methods including Hydropunch® groundwater sampling, Cone Penetrometer Testing for detailed soil lithology evaluation, and computerized groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport modeling. AquaTek's approach resulted in short-term savings to the client for the assessment of soil and groundwater media beneath the site and provided the basis for long-term remedial cost savings through an NJDEP-approved natural attenuation/monitoring scenario.
Commuter Bus Carrier

AquaTek was retained by a major commuter bus transportation carrier in the metropolitan New York area to close all of the UST systems located throughout its sprawling Jersey City facility. The former tanks were located both within multiple on-site buildings and at several locations around the site. During tank removals, unknown tanks were discovered and immediately remediated. Several large tanks were positioned under an area of the site that experienced significant daily bus traffic related to the client's busy round-the-clock commuter bus operations. Due to widespread petroleum impact of the underlying soils to a depth of over 20 feet, below grade, a large excavation resulted and intricate traffic safety plans were developed by AquaTek to enable a continuous flow of commuter bus operations. AquaTek's strategic planning on this project enabled a smooth flow of operations for the client with no delay events due to the firm's work around the site. Following completion of AquaTek's work at the site, an NFA determination was obtained on behalf of the client.
